Most of the times when I snack I eat healhty snacks (fruit, veggies etc.). Of course I eat unhealthy snacks sometimes (chocolate..when it’s that time of the month again) and one of my favorite “unhealthy” snacks is popcorn! At night when I’m watching a movie or tv serie it is the perfect snack. And did you know that it is not thát unhealthy?
Researchers from the University of Scranton found out that popcorn has a lot of antioxidants, polyphenols to be precise. Polyphenols can protect your body against heart diseases, cancer and other diseases. The concentration of these antioxidanta in popcorn is even higher than in most fruits! And guess what’s the most healthy part of the popcorn? The little skin that tends to get stuck between your teeth. It has lots of polyphenols and fibers.
But if it is such a healhty snack why do so many people think it is unhealhty? Well, because it all depends on the way you prepare it. Most people prepare it with tons of oil or butter (or they buy ready-to-use or microwave popcorn). The huge amount of salt, butter or caramel that people eat it makes it unhealthy. Or even a caloriebomb. My favorite way of preparing popcorn is to get the corn, put it in a pan on medium heat (without oil, so keep that corn moving!) and let it pop. Then I add a little bit of salt and voila. My favorite snack.
