Before I went to China everybody told me I would be eating lots and lots of rice. Personally I didn’t really know what to expect, but since I’m a very easy person when it comes to food I was very curious. At the Chinese restaurants in the Netherlands you can order, rice, nasi, satay, foe yong hai, tjaptjoy etc. Well, except rice I did not eat or saw any of these dishes. And I also didn’t eat that much rice, a riceburger on the first day (as you can see in Sundays InstaDairy) that was delicious. En rice as a side dish on the last evening. Oh, and for lunch one day. But I didn’t like that because I was hungry again an hour later. But the Chinese colleagues had rice with chicken and veggies for lunch everyday. But what kind of food did they have if it wasn’t all rice? Well first of all: a lot of different en delicious dishes. You can compare the way they served the dishes in the Chinese restaurants with the Spanish tapas. You order a lot of dishes and everybody takes a little bit from every dish. As a side dish you can order rice but also noodles, soup, some sort of bread etc. These dishes are serverd last.
Most restaurants have round tables. There is a tray in the middle that can move and they put all the dishes on that tray. It is also pretty normal to have a table in a private room.
But what did I eat? Well, a lot of things! Because you take a little bit of every dish you are able to try and taste a lot of things. Here is a collage of some of the things I ate, photos taken with my iPhone.
Of course I do not know the names of most of the dishes anymore, but these were my favorites. Not the best photos, because they were taken very quickly with my iPhone under bad light circumstances.
Peking Duck. I never had this before and was a bit scared first. But is was delicious. This is the way you should eat it on a little “pancake” with some veggies and sauce. Roll it up and enjoy.
This chicken was on of our favorites! We ordered it multiple times. It’s pieces of chicken with a vegetable that is somewhat like scallion, cashew nuts, some hot peppers and a sweetsour sauce. Delicious!
This fish may look gruesome but it was a dish we ordered multiple times. The fish is cut in a very special way and marinaded with a lovely weet sauce. It tasted amazing.
This salad was delicious as well. It has some kind of beans in it and a dressing that is a little bit spicy and hot.
If you want to know what some of the other things on the collage are, don’t hesitate to ask in the comments.
